JSTOR: Free Classics Scholarship At Your Fingertips

Independent scholars are a feature of the academic space, and it’s getting easier rather than harder for have access to free Classics scholarship.

JSTOR has access to a variety of scholarly articles, and (at least in my day) was a go-to college research resource.

But believe it or not, you don’t have to have library access. And current settings (6/7/2026) allow you to have up to 100 articles per month to read instead of having to pay for everything.

AMAZING.

Who it's For:

Secondary sources are more suitable for later undergrads/graduate students.

Classical Studies Insights

If you’re browsing, they have a list by subject.

It provides a good starting point to understand different Classics journals. It’s not everything published, but it’s more than enough to give anyone a solid scholarly context for different works and themes.

Find References Across Disciplines

And naturally, there is also search for keywords and phrases. For autodidacts interested in connected disciplines, this is a lovely research: when are people talking about Vergil in the “Divine Comedy”? What does Vergil have to do with conservation?

Connected queries are simple.

(P.S. also weird for me to search for myself and see people quoting my research!)

Searchable Image Collections

JSTOR is also connected to ARTSTOR, allowing users to search a database of archive imagery.

We truly live in the connected age. If people have access to the internet, even without a library close by, they can still be a part of the scholarly world.

Free accounts have some limits, but not enough to stop a serious venture into Classics.

Ad scientiam, Magistra
