Your Online Ancient Greek English Dictionary: Woodhouse

Studying antiquity would be impossible without a good Ancient Greek-English Dictionary, or in this case English-Greek. Writing Ancient Greek is not a skill that’s easy to come by. Even when I was in graduate school, which technically had a requirement for composition, it was barely offered. It’s hard to do well, and very hard to teach.

Your Resource for Ancient Greek Composition

I don’t think my class would have gotten very far without this resource. The online version of this 1910 book is what will enable countless students to succeed.

Idiomatic Vocabulary At Your Search

The Greek language is notoriously difficult. Sure, it’s not the hardest language in the world, probably, but its grammar and vocabulary are detailed. There are tons of different dialects, and each author has his (or her… but mostly his) own style.

Living in a time that allows us to search in English for a variety of Greek words that may fit our intended meaning is priceless.

Foundation of Attic Greek Prose

S.C. Woodhouse of happy memory logically made a choice to focus his English-Greek Dictionary on the Attic Greek dialect. Hellenists know that, for good or ill, Athens dominates our primary evidence. With the exception of Koine Greek needed for reading the New Testament, probably the most read collection of Greek literature is from Athens.

This book provides the needed information for composing like Thucydides — if you dare.

Not much more to say other than this is the best resource for finding Greek words through English.
